About This Service

About Our Freestanding Pergola Installation Service

A freestanding pergola stands on its own four posts, independent of any connection to the house, giving you complete flexibility in where it lives on your property. Pool decks, garden areas, rear yard entertaining zones, side yards, patio areas at grade — a freestanding pergola can anchor any outdoor space regardless of its relationship to the main structure. JHL Pergola & Carport Builders designs and installs freestanding pergolas in cedar, vinyl, and aluminum throughout Chester and Delaware Counties, with every installation built on properly engineered concrete footings that meet or exceed Pennsylvania's frost depth requirements.

Pennsylvania frost depth in Chester and Delaware Counties is 36 inches. Every JHL freestanding pergola post is set on a concrete footing poured to at least that depth, and footing diameter is sized based on the structural load the post carries — larger structures with deeper beams require larger diameter footings. A footing poured to 18 or 24 inches — common in cheaper installations — will heave seasonally as the ground freezes and thaws, gradually pushing the post upward and eventually causing the entire structure to rack out of square.

Freestanding Pergola Installation — FAQs

How deep are freestanding pergola footings in Chester County?

A minimum of 36 inches — Pennsylvania's required frost depth for Chester and Delaware Counties. JHL pours concrete tube footings at that depth as the baseline for every freestanding post, and we go deeper when site conditions or load calculations call for it. This is non-negotiable from a structural performance standpoint.

Can I put a freestanding pergola over my existing patio or pavers?

Yes. For paver or flagstone patios, we core-drill through the paving to set footings below the frost line, then reset the paving material around the post bases. For concrete patios, we core-drill through the slab and extend the footing below it. In both cases, the footing is structurally independent of the existing paving. We take care to minimize disturbance to the surrounding surface and restore any disturbed areas on completion.

What size freestanding pergola works for a pool deck?

Pool deck pergolas are typically sized to create a defined shade zone — common configurations run from 12x16 to 16x24 feet, positioning enough shade for a seating group or dining area without blocking the entire pool surround. The right size depends on your pool's layout, the sun orientation of the pool deck, and how you use the space. JHL will walk the site and discuss your functional goals before proposing a footprint.

Does a freestanding pergola in my backyard need a permit?

In most Chester and Delaware County municipalities, freestanding structures over a certain square footage require at minimum a zoning permit. Some townships require a building permit for any permanent accessory structure regardless of size. JHL researches the specific requirements for your address and handles all permit applications and inspections.

Can a freestanding pergola be enlarged after installation?

Enlarging an existing freestanding pergola typically involves adding a bay — extending the rafter run with additional posts, footings, and beams. This is straightforward when the original structure was designed with future expansion in mind, and more complex when it wasn't. If you're thinking about future expansion, tell us at the design stage and we'll build the initial structure to accommodate it cleanly.

What's the best material for a freestanding garden pergola in Chester County?

Cedar is the most popular choice for garden-context freestanding pergolas throughout Chester County. Its natural grain, warm color, and ability to be stained or left to weather naturally make it the most visually appropriate material for garden settings. Cedar structures also tend to feel proportionally correct in garden contexts where aluminum and vinyl can look industrial or commercial by comparison. If maintenance is a concern, a quality penetrating stain applied every four to five years is all cedar requires.
