About Our Pergola with Roof Installation Service
A pergola with a roof is the hybrid outdoor structure that gives you the best of both categories: the open, airy aesthetic and dappled light quality of a pergola combined with the rain protection you actually need to use the space on imperfect weather days. The most common approach is polycarbonate panel roofing installed over a standard pergola rafter frame — the panels are translucent, admitting filtered natural light rather than creating the cave-like feel of a solid shingle roof, while providing complete rain protection and UV blocking. JHL Pergola & Carport Builders designs and installs pergola-with-roof systems throughout Chester and Delaware Counties in attached and freestanding configurations, with cedar, vinyl, and aluminum framing options.
The pergola-with-roof approach using polycarbonate works because polycarbonate is lightweight enough to be carried by a standard pergola rafter system without requiring the heavier beam and post sizing that a solid shingle or metal roof would demand. The rafter spacing is reduced slightly to provide adequate panel support — typically 24 inches on center — and the panels are retained in aluminum glazing channels that keep them from lifting in wind and seal the edges against water intrusion.

Pergola with Roof Installation — FAQs
Will polycarbonate roofing make my pergola feel like a greenhouse?
This is the most common concern about polycarbonate roofing and it's largely addressable through panel selection. Clear polycarbonate in full sun can create heat buildup — similar to a car windshield effect. Bronze-tinted or opal (diffused white) twin-wall polycarbonate significantly reduces heat transmission and eliminates the direct-sun glare. For south-facing or west-facing patios with strong afternoon sun exposure, JHL specifies tinted or opal panels as the default recommendation.
How is polycarbonate roofing attached to a cedar pergola frame?
Polycarbonate panels are retained in aluminum H-channel glazing bars that are screwed to the top face of the rafters. The panels slot into the channels and are sealed at the ridge and perimeter edges with aluminum flashing and appropriate sealant. The channel screws are installed with neoprene washers to prevent water intrusion at the fastener penetrations. Panels are never directly screwed through their face without a proper closure system — that approach leads to cracking and leaking.
Can I put a polycarbonate roof on my existing pergola?
Possibly. The feasibility depends on the existing rafter spacing, the rafter structural condition, and whether the existing frame has enough pitch (or can be modified to have enough pitch) to drain effectively. JHL will assess your existing pergola before quoting a roofing conversion and give you an honest assessment of whether it makes sense to work with the existing frame or replace it.
Does a roofed pergola require a permit in Chester or Delaware County?
Adding a solid or covered roof to a pergola changes its classification in most municipalities from an open accessory structure to a covered accessory structure, which typically triggers a building permit requirement if one wasn't already required. For new builds, any structure with a roof — even polycarbonate — generally requires a building permit in Chester and Delaware County municipalities. JHL handles the permit process entirely.
How do I clean polycarbonate panels on a pergola roof?
Polycarbonate panels should be cleaned with a soft cloth or sponge and mild soap and water — never with abrasive cleaners or rough scrubbing pads that will scratch the UV coating. For pergola-height installations, most panels can be cleaned from the ground with a soft brush on an extension pole. Avoid high-pressure washing directly on the panels as it can force water into the panel edges and glazing channel seals.
How long does a pergola-with-roof installation take?
A standard pergola-with-polycarbonate-roof installation takes two to three days for the crew. This includes framing, glazing channel installation, panel cutting and installation, gutter and downspout installation, and all edge sealing. Permit approval timing adds two to four weeks depending on the municipality.
