About This Service

About Our Louvered Pergola Installation Service

A motorized louvered pergola is the highest-performing outdoor structure category available — the product that turns an ordinary pergola into a genuine year-round outdoor room. With adjustable aluminum louvers operated by Somfy motors, you control the amount of sun, shade, and ventilation your space receives with a button press, a voice command, or an automated schedule. When rain comes, the louvers close and integrated gutters channel water through the posts to the ground. You stay dry. You stay comfortable. The space stays usable from early spring through late fall and, with the addition of patio heaters, well into winter.

The aluminum louver blades rotate on a central pivot rod, driven by a Somfy RTS or IO-homecontrol motor mounted within the beam profile. The motor drives all louver blades in a bay simultaneously, keeping them synchronized. A single remote or wall switch controls each zone independently or all zones together. Louvers can be set to any angle between fully open (maximum ventilation, dappled shade) and fully closed (full rain protection, maximum shade). The transition takes approximately 45 seconds from fully open to fully closed.

Louvered Pergola Installation — FAQs

How do motorized louvers handle snow load in Pennsylvania winters?

Somfy motorized louver systems include a manufacturer-recommended protocol for winter use: louvers should be left in the open position when snow is possible, allowing snow to fall through the open slats rather than accumulate on the louver surface. For light snow events, the system can be operated to clear light accumulation, but heavy snow accumulation on closed louvers is not recommended. Most Pennsylvania homeowners with louvered pergolas use them seasonally and close the louver position for winter with a protective cover on the motor components.

Do louvered pergola systems require an electrical connection?

Yes. The Somfy motors require a 120V power connection, which means a licensed electrician needs to run conduit from your home's panel or a junction point to the pergola location. JHL coordinates the electrical rough-in as part of the installation process, working with a licensed electrician. The wall switch is a standard outlet-mounted device; the wireless remote operates independently of the electrical connection for convenience.

Can a louvered system be added to an existing wood or vinyl pergola?

Not reliably. Motorized louver systems are engineered to integrate with aluminum beam profiles that have the louver track machined into the extrusion. Retrofitting louver tracks onto wood or vinyl beams is not a supported installation method and typically results in a structurally compromised installation. If you have an existing wood or vinyl pergola and want a louvered system, the correct approach is to replace the frame with an aluminum frame designed for the louver system.

What happens during a power outage — can I still operate the louvers?

Yes. Somfy RTS motors include a manual override mode that can be activated via the remote control handset even without grid power, as long as the motor's internal capacitor holds a charge. For extended outages, the louvers can typically be moved to a desired position and left there. Some homeowners add a battery backup to the motor circuit for this scenario — this is a simple addition that JHL can include in the electrical scope.

How long does a louvered pergola installation take?

Installation of a motorized louvered pergola system typically takes three to four days for the structural crew, with an additional half-day for the electrician to complete the wall switch and conduit run. Total project timeline from signed contract to installation start is typically six to eight weeks, including permit approval and material fabrication lead time for the aluminum extrusions and louver components.

What's the maintenance requirement for a motorized louvered system?

Maintenance is minimal. The powder-coated aluminum frame requires only occasional washing with mild soap and water. The louver blades should be cleaned of debris and dirt periodically, which is done by opening the louvers and hosing them down from below. The gutter channels should be cleared of debris once or twice per year — again, accessible from below with the louvers open. Somfy motors are rated for 50,000+ cycles and rarely require service under residential use conditions.
