About Our Custom Pavilion Builder Service
A pavilion is a pergola with a real roof — a solid or translucent overhead covering that provides full protection from rain, snow, and direct sun regardless of weather conditions. Where a pergola offers shade and partial protection, a pavilion turns your outdoor space into a fully weather-protected room that you can use on a rainy July afternoon, a bright October morning, or a mild February day with a patio heater running. JHL Pergola & Carport Builders designs and builds custom pavilions throughout Chester and Delaware Counties, with roof options in architectural shingles, standing-seam metal, and polycarbonate panel systems to match your property and performance requirements.
Architectural shingles are the most popular choice for pavilions adjacent to the home because the shingle can be matched to the home's existing roof, creating visual consistency. A pavilion with a shingle roof reads as a natural extension of the home's architecture rather than a separate outbuilding. Standard 30-year architectural shingles are used, with proper ice and water shield at eaves and valleys.

Custom Pavilion Builder — FAQs
What's the difference between a pavilion and a pergola?
A pergola has an open rafter roof — it provides shade and visual definition but does not protect from rain. A pavilion has a solid or covered roof that provides full rain protection. Pavilions are significantly more functional in rainy or cold weather, but also cost more due to the roof structure, sheathing, roofing material, and gutters. If year-round use is a priority, a pavilion is the better investment.
Can a pavilion roof match my home's existing shingles?
Yes, and this is the most common roof choice for pavilions positioned directly adjacent to or attached to the home. We identify your existing shingle color and manufacturer if possible and specify the closest current match. For homes with older or discontinued shingle colors, we'll provide samples of the best available match. Perfect matching is not always possible given product line changes, but we typically get very close.
Does a pavilion require a building permit in Chester and Delaware Counties?
Yes. A pavilion with a solid roof is treated as a permanent accessory structure in all Chester and Delaware County municipalities and requires a building permit in virtually every case. The permit process requires a site plan, structural details, and framing/roofing specifications. JHL prepares and submits all permit documentation and manages the inspection process through final sign-off.
Can I add electricity to a pavilion for lights and heaters?
Yes, and we recommend doing the electrical rough-in during the build rather than retrofitting it later. Running conduit and junction boxes while the structure is being framed is far easier and cleaner than doing it after the roof is on. JHL coordinates the electrical rough-in with a licensed electrician as part of the project, positioning outlet boxes, ceiling fan junction boxes, and heater circuits where they'll be most useful.
How much snow load can a pavilion roof handle?
Pavilion roofs are engineered to meet or exceed the Pennsylvania ground snow load design standard for Chester and Delaware Counties, which is 25 psf (pounds per square foot) ground snow load. Roof live load and snow load calculations are performed based on the roof pitch, span, and framing system. Steeper roof pitches shed snow more aggressively and reduce accumulated load; standing-seam metal roofs are particularly effective at shedding snow cleanly.
How long does a custom pavilion installation take?
A standard pavilion build — frame, roof, gutters, and trim — typically takes four to seven days for the crew depending on size and complexity. Electrical work adds one to two additional days. Permit approval timing varies by municipality but typically runs two to four weeks. Total lead time from signed contract to installation start is generally six to eight weeks.
