About Our Motorized Pergola Installation Service
A motorized pergola brings automated shade control to your outdoor space — no manual adjustment, no getting up to crank a shade, no wrestling with a fixed structure that's either too sunny or too dark. At the press of a button, a remote, or a scheduled timer, your pergola shade extends or retracts. Add a wind or sun sensor and the system responds automatically to changing conditions without you lifting a finger.
The core mechanism is a motorized retractable canopy or pergola blade system integrated into an aluminum frame. Depending on the system type, the motor drives fabric panels that extend across the pergola opening, or it drives adjustable blade rafters that rotate to any angle from fully open to fully closed. Both types use Somfy-compatible motors — the industry standard for outdoor automation — which means full integration with Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit, and most smart home platforms via the Somfy TaHoma or MyLink bridge. The difference from a louvered pergola is the mode of operation: a motorized pergola typically features a fabric or solid-panel shade element that retracts completely when not in use, restoring a fully open overhead view, rather than louver slats that adjust angle.
Installation requires concrete footings poured to Pennsylvania frost depth, aluminum post and beam framing, motor wiring with outdoor-rated conduit, and a licensed electrician's involvement for the 120V connection. JHL handles everything from permit research and application through final walkthrough. Our crews are direct employees — no subcontracted labor — and we've installed motorized shade systems throughout West Chester, Newtown Square, Wayne, Malvern, Exton, and surrounding Chester and Delaware County communities.

Motorized Pergola Installation — FAQs
What is the difference between a motorized pergola and a louvered pergola?
A motorized pergola typically features a retractable fabric canopy or motorized blade rafters that open and close — when retracted, the overhead view is fully open sky. A louvered pergola uses fixed aluminum louver slats that rotate on a central pivot to control sun angle and ventilation; the louvers do not retract fully. Both use Somfy motors and smart home integration. The right choice depends on whether you prefer a fully open look when shade is not needed (motorized retractable) versus a structure that always has overhead coverage with adjustable light control (louvered).
Can a motorized pergola be controlled from my phone?
Yes. Somfy RTS and IO-homecontrol motors connect to the Somfy TaHoma or MyLink hub, which integrates with the Somfy app for iOS and Android. From the app, you can extend, retract, or set any position on your shade system from anywhere with a cell signal. The same hub enables Alexa voice commands, Google Home routines, and Apple HomeKit automations, so you can incorporate the pergola into existing smart home scenes.
Do weather sensors work automatically without me setting a schedule?
Yes. A Somfy wind sensor triggers automatic retraction when wind speed exceeds a preset threshold — this protects the fabric or blade system from damage in gusts. A sun sensor monitors UV intensity and can automatically extend the shade when sunlight reaches a set level and retract it when it drops. Both sensors communicate wirelessly with the motor receiver and work without any manual input once configured.
Does a motorized pergola require a building permit in Chester County, PA?
Most motorized pergola installations in Chester County and surrounding municipalities require a zoning or building permit, particularly when the structure involves footings. Requirements vary by township. JHL researches the permit requirements for your specific municipality and manages the application process as part of every installation — you do not need to handle permit paperwork yourself.
How long does installation take?
A typical motorized pergola installation takes two to three days for the structural crew, plus an additional half-day for the electrician to complete the conduit run and wall switch. From signed contract to installation start, expect six to eight weeks to allow for permit approval and motor system lead time.
What happens if the motor fails?
Somfy motors come with a manufacturer warranty and are field-serviceable. The motor unit is accessible from below the frame and can be replaced without dismantling the structure. In the event of a motor issue, JHL coordinates service and can source replacement motor units directly. Somfy RTS motors are rated for 50,000+ cycles under residential use — failure under normal operation is uncommon.
Can I add a motorized pergola to an existing deck or patio?
Yes — the pergola posts can be surface-mounted to an existing deck or concrete patio using post-base hardware, or set in new concrete footings adjacent to the existing surface. The structural approach depends on your patio type and the pergola size. We review this during the free site visit and specify the appropriate footing method in the construction drawings.
