What Is a Beam?
Beams are the main horizontal members of a pergola that sit on the posts and carry the rafters and roof load.
A beam (or bearer) is the primary horizontal support that rests on top of the posts and carries the rafters. Beam size is engineered to the span and the roof load — including snow load and any louvered or solid roofing — so the structure stays rigid.
